The Willow High School Orchestra performed their Fall Concert on Sunday, Nov. 5, at the St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church. They performed five pieces: "Carnival Overture" (Dvorak); "Variations" (Paganini); "Spring Breezes"- Taiwanese Folk Song (arranged by Meyer); "Molly on the Shore" (Grainger); "Iditarod" (Newbold). Willow junior Jake Guichet has been named a "Manning Award Future" by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Jake is one of four local high school quarterbacks who turned in outstanding performances on the football field this past weekend. The recognition is entitled "Futures" as these high school stars are potential future candidates for the Manning Award, which recognizes the top collegiate quarterback in the nation. It was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. Way to go, Jake!


Our next High School Parent Coffee will be on Thursday, Nov. 16, in the library. The library will also be hosting The High School Fall Book Fair at that time. Maiou Zhang, Marigny Gill, and Marbella Maristany were 3 of only 24 high school girls in the state selected to participate in the 2023 LHSCA All-Star Tennis Championships at the LSU Tennis Complex in Baton Rouge on Saturday, October 28th.
Zhang reached the state quarterfinal match before being eliminated from the singles tournament championship bracket. Gill/Maristany were state quarterfinalists in the doubles tournament championship bracket before losing in a tough 3rd set tiebreaker. Gill/Maristany then went on to reach the finals of the doubles tournament back draw before being eliminated from competition after another close 3rd set tiebreaker defeat.

Congrats to Willow High science teacher Ms. Cindy Ferrara! She is among 24 science teachers who have been named regional winners in the annual Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge. The competition encouraged K–12 teachers who have found innovative ways to deliver quality lab experiences with limited school and laboratory resources to share their approaches for a chance to win a school science lab makeover support package. Ms. Ferrara received a school science lab makeover support package valued at $10,000. Fantastic!


Staff members Megan Neelis, Janine Murry, Nicole Buckels, Tai Teamer, Sheila Banks and Therese Fitzpatrick represented the Willow School at the Arts Schools Network Annual Conference in Birmingham, Alabama this week. The school was acknowledged as a national Exemplary Arts School. While away, the team participated in impactful experiences focusing on teaching anti-racism and equity through the arts.


On Friday, Oct. 27, during lunch time 12:15-1:15pm, Balfour will be on campus (2nd Floor near the business office hallway) to take orders for any Junior/Senior athlete interested in purchasing a letterman jacket. Athletes must have participated in a sport for a period of 2 or more years. Junior/Senior artists who are involved with Willow Arts Programs are also allowed to purchase letterman jackets with the approval of Mr. Hill. Three Willow School teachers are included among 89 winners of New Schools for New Orleans' 2023 New Orleans Excellence in Teaching Awards (NOETA). Congratulations to Ms. Marquise Reine, our Lower School Assistant Principal; Ms. Danette Thierry, Middle School Social Studies teacher; and Mr. Shawn McCrea, our High School Stagecraft teacher. The NOETA was presented alongside a $1,000 Classroom Excellence Grant at the annual NOETA Gala on Oct. 21. These amazing teachers represent the top 3 percent of educators in the city!
