Staff members Megan Neelis, Janine Murry, Nicole Buckels, Tai Teamer, Sheila Banks and Therese Fitzpatrick represented the Willow School at the Arts Schools Network Annual Conference in Birmingham, Alabama this week. The school was acknowledged as a national Exemplary Arts School. While away, the team participated in impactful experiences focusing on teaching anti-racism and equity through the arts.
On Friday, Oct. 27, during lunch time 12:15-1:15pm, Balfour will be on campus (2nd Floor near the business office hallway) to take orders for any Junior/Senior athlete interested in purchasing a letterman jacket. Athletes must have participated in a sport for a period of 2 or more years. Junior/Senior artists who are involved with Willow Arts Programs are also allowed to purchase letterman jackets with the approval of Mr. Hill. Three Willow School teachers are included among 89 winners of New Schools for New Orleans' 2023 New Orleans Excellence in Teaching Awards (NOETA). Congratulations to Ms. Marquise Reine, our Lower School Assistant Principal; Ms. Danette Thierry, Middle School Social Studies teacher; and Mr. Shawn McCrea, our High School Stagecraft teacher. The NOETA was presented alongside a $1,000 Classroom Excellence Grant at the annual NOETA Gala on Oct. 21. These amazing teachers represent the top 3 percent of educators in the city!

On Oct. 14, the Willow volleyball team (varsity and JV) participated in a morning of service at Okra Abbey, a community garden in uptown New Orleans. They spent the morning weeding, fertilizing and planting vegetables and flowers.
The Friends of the New Orleans Public Library has multiple volunteer opportunities coming up. They are seeking student volunteers in need of community service hours who can assist with book sales. The Mayor's Office of Youth and Families' 2023 Mayor For a Day Essay Contest is now accepting submissions through Oct. 30. The program aims to foster and encourage leadership in young people living in New Orleans. New Orleans youth ages 11 to 18 are invited to write essays about what New Orleans would be like if they were Mayor for a day. Three winners will be selected and given the opportunity to be sworn in and shadow the Mayor for a day. Willow alum Karisma Price recently visited the High School library and read from her book, I’m Always So Serious. She spoke to creative writing students about her writing process and her studies as a college and graduate student.
